Introverted Strengths at Work: A Game-Changing Framework
The very first course I took in my Master of Organizational Development and Leadership program changed my life. The course topic was Appreciative Inquiry, a philosophy centered in leveraging an organization’s past successes to foster future positive outcomes. This approach shifts the focus from fixing problems to amplifying strengths, laying a foundation for sustained, positive change.
Appreciative Inquiry encourages teams to explore “peak experiences” and identify the strengths that made these moments successful. These discovered strengths form what is known as the team’s “positive core.” Consultants then guide the team to envision an ideal future that emphasizes its positive core, rather than working to correct shortcomings.
A great example shared early in the course brought the framework to life for me. British Airways had significant issues with baggage handling and customer arrival experiences, often resulting in lost luggage and very unhappy passengers. Instead of asking what was causing these problems, the consultants asked employees to recount times when customers had exceptional arrival experiences. This allowed them to identify key components and best practices for stellar service. This positive, inclusive approach not only uncovered effective solutions but also motivated and energized the team, steering members away from blame and toward innovation.
How Appreciative Inquiry Reshaped My Outlook
Armed with an Appreciative Inquiry mindset, I began approaching goals, strategies, and tactics by considering what had worked well in the past and what strengths I brought to those scenarios. And what happened is this: unexpected doors and opportunities opened. I felt so much more positively about myself, my teams, and my projects. Plus, without the cloud of my glass-half-full mindset, I was generally a happier person.
Wait…There’s a Coaching Version of This?
Appreciative Inquiry’s principles extend beyond organizational contexts into personal growth through what is known as Appreciative Coaching. This approach adapts the framework to individual coaching, helping people identify and build on their personal strengths to achieve their goals.
In my coaching practice, I utilize Appreciative Coaching to help introverted professionals to discover the best of who they are – their individual positive core – and design pathways toward their ideal professional future. We focus on identifying their innate talents and leveraging these to show up more powerfully and effectively, supporting career advancement and overall job satisfaction.
“Trying on” the Appreciative Coaching Framework
If you’re curious about how to apply Appreciative Coaching principles to foster your own growth, here are some ways you can get started on your own:
- Ask Powerful Questions: Use your introspective skills to ask questions that unearth your strengths. Questions like, “When have I felt most energized at work?” or “What successes have I had that felt almost effortless?” can reveal your underlying talents.
- Reflect on Peak Experiences: Think back to times when you felt truly accomplished. What were you doing? With whom were you working? Understanding these scenarios can help pinpoint the conditions under which you thrive.
- Conduct a Strengths-Based Analysis: Regularly assess your contributions through a lens of strength. Which of your actions have led to successful outcomes? Acknowledging these can reinforce your confidence and guide your future actions.
- Envision Your Ideal Professional Future: Consider what your dream professional scenario looks like for 2025. What strengths will help you get there? If strategic thinking is part of your positive core, for example, how can you position yourself in roles that capitalize on this strength?
Embracing this mindset shift, where you focus on building upon your strengths rather than merely fixing weaknesses, can be truly transformative in your leadership journey. It paves the way for more authentic, confident, and effective interactions in your professional environment, enabling you to lead with assurance and insight – ultimately getting the roles, recognition, and rewards that you deserve.
